Dear friend,
Just back home after a short weekend in Barcelona. There's more to see than you can cover in two days, but we did our best. These photos will give you an idea of our experiences in this most photogenic of cities - it even made us look good!

Just back home after a short weekend in Barcelona. There's more to see than you can cover in two days, but we did our best. These photos will give you an idea of our experiences in this most photogenic of cities - it even made us look good!
We started at Park Güell. I loved the two Hansel and Gretel entrance pavilions and the mosaic dragon. We found ourselves gazing in wonder at everything, as you can see in the photo.
From there we went down to La Rambla, the city's most famous street and the main avenue of its old section. It's crowded and lively, with lots of touristy shops. But the best part for us was La Boqueria, the enormous food market with its magnificent modernist iron roof.
The medieval atmosphere of the old quarter is truly magical, with its maze of narrow streets - a mix of 13th century buildings and hip 21st century shops. First stop was the Cathedral, appropriately large and imposing, but the really beautiful part is the cloister inside.
We also wanted to get close to the sea, which is one of the things that makes a visit here so special.
We were ready to visit two more essential destinations - the Palau de la Musica and the Sagrada Familia.
We returned to old quarter to see the Palau de la Musica, the aptly named Music Palace, since a more glorious architectural setting for music is hard to imagine.
We had heard so much about the Sagrada Familia from friends and family, but there's nothing like seeing it for yourself. Like it or not, and we had both reactions, you can't help but be impressed by the power of the imagination - and the determination to turn it into a reality -- that went into it.
We wanted to go to the beach to end our day, but before getting there we stopped at the Torre Agbar, since it was on the way, and had caught our eye when we arrived the night before. It's the architectural opposite of the Sagrada Familia, but a perfect complement as the symbol of contemporary Barcelona.
